Repeating the same old mistakes and expecting better results

After reading our previous article titled Flagrant examples of corruption in Armenia, published on Jan. 12, 2021 many Armenians living in the diaspora and Armenia expressed the valid concern that the article does not contain anything about the corrupt entourage of PM Nikol Pashinyan, and most of the accusations mentioned involve state bureaucrats associated with the old guard ousted from power by “The Velvet Revolution” back in 2018.

I did mention in our article that the names associated with corruption in Armenia are only “the tip of the iceberg”. The analogy of the iceberg was used to emphasize the fact that corruption is so deeply rooted in The State Bureaucracy of Armenia, those prosecuted represent a small portion delivered to the attention of the public for many reasons that we cannot elaborate simply because they require an expose by themselves.

At no point we made any attempt to conceal the fact that PM Pashinyan promised a lot but failed to deliver anything significant. From improving the cooperation with Russia, to building a strong economy able to support the pillars of a formidable army that can act as a deterrent  to the multiple external enemies of Armenia, his score is well below impressive.

Like all leaders who turn an ideology or a set of ideas into a rallying cry, he used the corruption and the illegitimate wealth accumulated by people associated with the old guard to grab power. Like all revolutionaries in the pages of human history, he repeated the same evils he used to condemn in his predecessors.

Once in power he surrounded himself with loyalists who were rewarded with sensitive positions, not because they cherished unique visions about moving Armenia to the “Promised Land” of honey, milk, and prosperity, but because he needed blind loyalty to consolidate power and build his empire that supposedly will shine forever in the history of Armenia.

Almost two years after the mandate he received from the populace at large, he imposed on Armenia, Artsakh, and the Diapora the most humiliating military disaster in our modern history, because he refused to give diplomacy a fair chance by embracing a Russian solution known as the “Lavrov Plan”. In the end how can you embrace the Russian formula for peace, and spare your nation thousands of martyrs, when you are surrounded by loyalists who falsely believe that you can insult Russia and remain totally immune to any form of retaliation from President Putin.

The most ironic personality on the list of corrupt followers who insulted Russia and were rewarded generously for their Russophobe attitude is Mr. David Sanasaryan. Entrusted by PM Pashinyan with the task of stamping out corruption in The Republic, Mr. Sanasaryan made his boss extremely proud, so proud that in an international forum (Council of Europe) PM Pashinyan proudly stated in 2019 that his government: “… managed to root out systemic corruption and to create real prerequisites for everyone’s equality before the law…”

It was a very shallow pride that came back to haunt him. The Tsar he chose to fight corruption was corrupt himself. In April 2019 Armenia’s National Security Service accused (but did not charge) Mr. Sanasaryan of failing to carry his official duties, abusing power, and promoting the financial interests of his friends and cronies, chief among them Mr. Samvel Adyan.

Though he was relieved from his official position, PM Pashinyan refused to accept the allegations of Armenia’s National Security Service, arguing that an accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

There is a good chance that Armenia might be forced to choose a new leader/Prime Minister this year. Every Armenian eligible to cast a ballot should read multiple times the following stark warning made by novelist Octavia Butler:

"Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool. To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen. To be led by a liar is to ask to be lied to. To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery."
