Knowledge The Critical Factor

An old Chinese proverb points out that “A goal without knowledge is like a boat stuck on dry land”.

In our maiden article we insisted that the focus of our attention will be a collective struggle to put an end to the following statements, devoid of historical context, that you frequently encounter in the Western media:

“…the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (also known as Artsakh). Officially part of Azerbaijan, the authorities in Baku have had no control over the territory since a destructive war in the early 1990s.” (The Conversation)

“…clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh, a part of Azerbaijan populated and controlled by ethnic Armenians.” (CBC)

“Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan, but is governed by ethnic Armenians backed by the Armenian government.” (BBC)

We emphasized the notion that simply because Stalin made a calamitous decision recognized by The UN, it does not automatically confer legitimacy to the Azeri claim that Nagorno Karabakh is an integral part of its sovereign territory.

But emphasis alone is not enough to overcome the existing odds and inform non-Armenian forums about the legal principles supporting Artsakh’s claim for self-determination. Every Armenian has to make an effort to understand the historical facts and the key legal tenets upon which Artsakh’s claims rest.

One good source, that I strongly encourage my readers to study, is an article titled Does Nagorno-Karabakh have the legal right to independence?”  published on October 15, 2020 (available here).

I strongly urge all my Armenian compatriots, especially those living in Western Democracies, to use every opportunity to contact any journalist, any newspaper, or any media outlet that publishes the statement “Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan”, and insist that it is absolutely irresponsible to take facts out of their historical context, and thus inadvertently become part of the infernal tragedies inflicted on our nation. Western media outlets must cease to contribute to the success of evil by using “International Law” as the anchor that supports Azerbaijan’s position. Time to remind The West that “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”   — Albert Einstein
