The Threats Targeting Freedom of Expression In Canada
In a recent article titled "The rise of pro-Western disinformation. Dirty tricks campaigns aren't confined to Russia", journalist Matthew Petti boldly defended the fact that "...disinformation is not the unique wonder-weapon of foreign despots. In other countries, Western governments and pro-West partisans are just as willing to put out dishonest and destructive propaganda."
Canada, a country where the "Charter of Rights" protects the average Canadian's right for freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, has witnessed since early October 2023 a blatant disregard for the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by any true democracy, and plunged into a dark abyss where government and private interest groups/accuracy verifiers, launched a vicious campaign to rally Canadians behind the notion that "the Israeli government is always right, and Palestinians resisting every unjust measure adopted by The Government of Israel, are wrong."
Canadians who have rejected the absurdity insisting on the "unconditional support for Israel", and dared to express their disdain for such a vacuous notion were ridiculed, blackmailed to impose a total silence on their dissenting views, and last but not least drastic measures were taken to destroy their careers.
Let me emphasize one crucial point again; I am talking about Canada not North Korea. Now, time to go into specifics instead of painting to readers general allegations without distinct names and victims who were targeted for their unorthodox views:
a) Dr. Yipeng Ge,"...suspended from his medical residency at the University of Ottawa after posting pro-Palestinian messages on social media that were also critical of Israel." He also accused the government of Israel of imposing painful apartheid measures based on findings published by Amnesty International, an NGO that on multiple occasion blamed Israel for "... subjecting Palestinians to a system of apartheid founded on policies of segregation, dispossession and exclusion that amounted to crimes against humanity."
b) Dr. Ben Thomson, a nephrologist at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, was suspended also from his job, multiple threats were registered on his voice mail system, and his residence's address was shared online to intimidate him and compel him to put an end to his pro-Palestinian views posted on multiple social media platforms. The following is an opinion Dr. Thomson dared to promote in his writings: "Death of civilians is without a doubt horrible and unacceptable...However, inciting genocide by dehumanizing Palestinians is also unacceptable."
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) an organization that supposedly defends the sanctity of the freedoms protected under the "Canadian Charter of Rights", and insists that CCLA "...actively stands up to power by fighting against rights violations, abuse of police powers, inequality, and discrimination..." did not launch a lawsuit against the two hospitals, did not voice serious concerns about the drastic measures adopted by institutions to silence dissenting views that do not support the policies of The Government of Israel, and of course the government of Canada watched the tragedy unfold and not a single Federal Official dared to argue that doctors should be suspended only for professional misconduct causing harm to patients, not for expressing political views that may offend a small segment of the Canadian population. Federal officials, with brains on a "Selective Amnesia" mode, forgot the following critical warning of The Supreme Court of Canada:"...the very lifeblood of democracy is the free exchange of ideas and opinions...Government overreach, censorship, and suppression are dangerous to democracy and to human rights."
The overreach of hospital administrators and their obsessive quest to silence dissenting doctors, so far did not alarm anyone and the erosion of basic freedoms is alive and blossoming in Canada.
